Emily’s maximum sustained winds have fallen near 30 mph

Former Tropical Storm Emily’s maximum sustained winds have fallen near 30 mph, and the storm has dissipated as a tropical cyclone, the National Hurricane Center reported.

Emily dumped heavy rains in the Bahamas and is moving away from the islands as a weak tropical depression.
Today at 5 p.m., meteorologists said the storm was 295 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C.

Emily had broken apart after causing floods and damaging hundreds of homes in Haiti. Forecasters expect the storm's remnants to be absorbed by a frontal zone over the next day or so.

Here on the Space Coast, today's scattered thunderstorms stemmed from an expected late-afternoon sea breeze moving in against westerly winds.

"The only impact for Brevard from Emily should be the continuation of enhanced rip currents," said Scott Kelly, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

Those currents will last at least through today. While typical for August in Florida, the heat index will likely exceed 100 degrees Monday along the Space Coast.

Temperatures are forecast to remain in the low to mid-90s all week.

Lt. Jeff Taylor of Brevard Fire-Rescue said one elderly man was taken to Parrish Medical Center on Saturday afternoon with heat-related problems.

Some hoped the storm-related winds would launch a wealth of waves.

Surfers Alyssa Fredricks and Tom Leitzsch of Boca Raton spent the weekend in Brevard County.

Saturday, they hit the water across from Patrick Air Force Base, discussing the weather and looking forward to today's early-morning possibilities.

"We planned this as soon as we heard about Emily," Fredricks said. "We were almost a little sad it dissipated so quickly."

But Leitzsch, who has surfed in Nicaragua and El Salvador, stayed positive:

"The waves should be pretty good early," he said, pointing toward the water. "We just got here too late today."
