Long Island Railroad fire knocks out all

The travelers were stranded and frustrated at Penn Station Long Island yesterday after rail service was halted in both directions due to switch problems.

A fire which occurred just before 11 knocked out a switch to the east of Jamaica Station, which affects all lines except for the Port Washington line. The lines serve between 230,000 and 240,000 people a day, according to the LIRR.

Railway officials are now scrambling to come up with a plan for the evening peak, when about 100,000 daily LIRR riders will try to get home after work.

Only the Port Washington Branch currently operates.

The train stopped at the nearest station shortly before 11 am, according to a LIRR, who said no one was injured in a fire reported.
