Amy Winehouse Dead: Could alcohol withdrawal have killed Her ?

British pop singer Amy Winehouse’s battle with alcohol may have killed her, but not because she drank too much the day she died.

She may have died because she didn’t drink at all.

Winehouse’s family reportedly said the 27-year-old gave up alcohol suddenly, causing her body to go into shock.

The Sun reports a family friend said:

“(Her father) said doctors had told Amy to gradually reduce her intake of alcohol and to avoid binging at all costs. Amy told him she couldn’t do that. It was all or nothing and she gave up completely.

“(Father) Mitch said the shock of giving up, after everything she had been through over a bad few years, was just too much for her to take.”

The official cause of death won’t be released for several weeks. But some doctors are saying the singer could have overwhelmed her body and experienced a seizure after quitting alcohol cold turkey

Alcohol withdrawal is a documented condition, with the American Family Physician journal reporting roughly 226,000 people were hospitalized with it in 2000. The actual number of cases could be higher, since not everyone impacted with alcohol withdrawal likely seeks medical attention.

The most severe kind of alcohol withdraw is called “delirium tremens.” In can cause seizures and even death.
